With just a 2-point spread there’s really not a lot of room for bettors in picking the outright winner. If you’re putting your money on the Steelers it makes sense to go for the outright win but if you like Green bay your options are a bit limited.

However, one betting avenue that’s often overlooked but might just be the ticket for Super Bowl XVL is playing the over/under.

Sure, it’s not a sexy play, but it might be the smart one if you don’t have clear idea of which team you like to win the game.

This game’s over/under at 44 is a pretty target to bet against. A quick look through some of the stats, reveals that this number isn’t all that rooted in reality.

The Packers averaged 24.3 ppg in the regular season and the Steelers averaged slightly less at 23.4 ppg.

But in the postseason the Pack is averaging a whopping 30.0 ppg while the Steelers are averaging a respectable 27.5 ppg in the playoffs.

So why is the over/under at 44?
These defenses are stingy, that’s why. During the regular season neither team gave up more than 15.0 ppg but in the playoffs they’re allowing 17.0 ppg and 21.5 ppg, respectively.

It’s difficult to reconcile exactly what these numbers mean in terms of a final score but if you’re thinking of betting on the Super Bowl a total of more than 44 points seems likely.

The Dallas Cowboys, the self proclaimed “America’s Team” coming off a 12-4 season with the roster intact and gunning to become the first team in history to play in a Super Bowl in their own city.

The Green Bay Packers entered the season with every reason to believe they’d win the NFC North and their high flying offense would lead them deep into the playoffs.

Both of these teams were leading NFC contenders for a Super Bowl bid and then the season started.

The two teams have been beset with injuries and poor execution and have just 6 wins between them. The Packers (5-3) are in far better shape than the ‘Boys (1-6) but neither has come close to living up to their promise.

Green Bay, if it can get healthy and find a running game, it’s got a chance of winning a playoff game. The NFC North is so rotten this season it’s hard to imagine any other team winning the division, handing the Pack the title almost by default.

In fairness to the Packers the team has been decimated by injuries to its starters on offense including RB Ryan Grant, TE JerMichael Findley and backup TE Derick Martin. Without a running threat the Green Bay passing game and QB Aaron Rogers have failed to live up to its potential.

If the Cowboys had the talent on defense they could exploit this weakness, but they don’t. So they won’t and they’ll likely give up a heap of points to the Packers. Dallas has one of the worst defenses in the league and is giving up 26.7 points per game.

Green Bay will be looking to head into their Bye Week (Week 10) with a win and try and heal up a bit. Dallas shouldn’t present much of a challenge and the Packers should win this sports betting sleeper without much problem.

Yes, the same Browns that have been the laughing stock of the NFL for the past several seasons. The same Browns team that has had 3 different starting QBs in the first 6 weeks of the NFL season and now currently has a rookie penciled at starter. The same Browns team has been plain awful for most of the 2010 NFL season.

The New England Patriots have the best record in football (6-1) and the top rated offense in the league (29.3 points per game) and arguably the smartest coach in the NFL.

But even with all these factors stacked against the Browns there’s also plenty of reason to think they might be able to pull off the upset this weekend, or at least beat the sports betting point spread.

The Browns are currently in the midst of a 1-game win streak and in Cleveland that passes for momentum. The team is also playing at home in the famed Dawg Pound and the fans will no doubt be up for this game.

Cleveland has struggled offensively for most of the season but with rookie Colt McCoy in the starting lineup the team has gone 1-1 and averaged 20 ppg, which is no small feat considering the opponents have been the 5-2 Steelers and the 5-3 Saints. During that span McCoy has thrown for 355 yards and completed 65.3 % of his passes.

The Browns will also have their beat in the backfield, Peyton Hillis (4.4 yards per carry, 5 TD), healthy again. Hillis is the type of bulldozing running back that can destroy the Pats defense and the kind that has given them trouble up the middle in the past.

Throw into play the fact that Browns are also coming off a bye week with an extra week for the staff to prepare McCoy for Bill Belichick’s exotic defensive schemes and the playing field gets leveled even further.

These variables don’t guarantee an NFL gambling victory for the Browns, but if you’re looking to bet on an upset this week, this game might just be your best option.

But in Week 8 against a crippled Green Bay team that had lost 2 out of its last 3 games the Jets looked like the worst team in the league, losing 9-0 at home in one of the ugliest shuts outs you’ll ever see.

The Lions (2-5), on the other hand, have had no trouble scoring this season and if the Jets don’t figure some things out in a hurry they could suffer their second straight defeat to an NFC North team this weekend.

New York should have dominated the Packers. The team was coming off a Bye week, was well rested and had plenty of extra time to game plan against a Green Bay offense that has been decimated by injuries to key players this NFL gambling season.

The defense played well giving up just 3 field goals but the offense was horrific. QB Mark Sanchez is still trying to prove he’s an NFL caliber QB but after a solid start he’s been awful the past few games and has 4 INTs in the past 2 games. On top of that he’s averaging just 193.7 yards per game, which has been mitigated somewhat by the Jets ability to run the ball (153.4 ypg on the ground) but it puts this team in a very bad spot if it gets behind early.

And that is distinct possibility against the Lions high flying offense.

Detroit may only have 2 wins on the season but over the past 4 games this team has gone 2-2 and averaged more than 30 points a game. With starting QB Matthew Stafford (4 TDs last week vs. a good Washington D) this offense looks it can score even more points.

The Jets defense has been exceptional again this season (15.7 ppg, 2nd best in the NFL) but its one weakness has been the passing game (218.6 ypg, and 10 TDs).

That’s exactly where the Lions will attack and that’s why Detroit has a good shot at upsetting the Jets in this sports betting matchup.

The Sea chickens are one of the pleasant surprises of the young NFL season and have a .5 game lead in the up for grabs NFC West. Under first-year head coach Pete Carroll this team has done better than most pundits expected and gone 3-0 at home this year.

However, Seattle will face its toughest challenge of the season so far when the Giants come to town this weekend.

Williams has 33 catches and 375 yards through 7 games and leads the team in receiving. But he’s been one of the lone bright spots for a Seattle offense that has struggled in the NFL gambling action.

The Seahawks are averaging just 17.6 ppg and against cut throat defense like the New York Giants that won’t get the job done.

The Seahawks defense has been capable, giving up just 20 ppg, but that’s been against mostly inferior competition and against well-balanced Giants attack (25 points per game, 388.7 total yards per game) it should be quite vulnerable.

The Giants are currently the best team in the NFC –by a wide margin- and seem to only get better with every game. The passing attack, led by QB Eli Manning, got off to a rough start with Manning throwing 6 INTs in his first 3 games but its seems on track now as does the running game.

The Giants are averaging 145.4 yards per game on the ground and if that isn’t enough to grind the Seattle defense into submission the offense also has 14 passing TDs on the year.

The Giants are simply too talented for decent Seahawks squad and they’ll get the Week 9 sports betting.

This is this first time these two teams have met with each being ranked in AP Top 25 Poll. Both reams trail Oregon in Pac-10 and without a win it will be unlikely for an appearance in the Rose Bowl. This game is basically a match-up of the Stanford offensive line against the Arizona defensive unit. Basically the Stanford Cardinals have protected QB Luck well this season allowing only three sacks, while the Arizona Wildcats lead their conference with 27 QB sacks led by their defensive ends.

These types of Stats make a game more challenging.

The latest on the NCAA Football odds on this game is that Stanford is favored at – 9 ½ with the OV/UN 56 and on the Money Line Stanford is -345 and Arizona is +285. All Odds and Lines will move often as wagering volume demands.

And even though the unsung heroes of the Giant’s lineup like the diminutive Cody Ross, the unwanted Aubry Huff and the World Series MVP Edgar Renteria stepped huge in the World Series for an explosion of unexpected runs, in the end it was the Giants famed pitching that got them through to the end.

For many Giant’s it seemed like just reaching the post season might be an impossible task for team that was at one point in the season 40-41 and trailed the San Diego Padres in the NL West for nearly the entire season. Add to that the fact that Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum had his worst statistical season as major league starter (16-10, 3.43 ERA) and #2 starter Matt Cain also had an off year (13-11, 3.45 ERA).

But after clinching the NL West on the final day of the season, this team made the most of its post season berth by bashing opponents’ pitching and shutting down batters all the way to the World Series betting action.

No one in July would have bet on the MLB World Series title landing in San Fran but once the Giants got into the playoffs the starting pitching and closer Brian Wilson made sure that this team didn’t go home empty handed.

Lincecum started off the postseason with one of the best playoff pitching performances in history in a 2-hit complete game shutout in which he struck out 14 batters. In the end he was the best pitcher in the playoffs this year with a 4-1 record and a 2.43 ERA with 43 Ks in 37 innings.

Cain was right there with him, perhaps even more impressive in his three playoff starts as he pitched 21.1 innings without giving up a single run (0.00 ERA) and a 2-0 record. And rookie Madison Bumgartner pitched the game of his life in Game 4 of the World Series shutting out the Rangers in a 4-0 win. Wilson was also spectacular as well as he racked 6 saves and 1 win on the Giants dash to the World Series title.

Tonight the Giants fans whom have been waiting 53 years to celebrate a World Series Championship will possibly celebrate tonight with a win or the party will be prolonged and head back to San Francisco to see if they get a party or not. Pitching tonight for the Rangers will be their Ace Cliff Lee who had a bad experience in Game 1 as he was around the strike zone but on the outer side if the plate and still the Giants went 4 for 7 or batted .571 in the early going. For all his previous success in postseason this is his first time to pitch in a playoff in Texas.

Where his normal count was like .231 in early going, so that surely indicates some control differences. It will be interesting to see if in this game 5 if he attempts to use the inner side of the plate as in most of his outings 35 percent of his speed or heat is on the batters hands side. He also had problems in game 1 of getting his curve ball in the strike zone as only 3 of his 11 curve balls thrown were for strikes.

While going to the mound in Game 5 for the Giants, Tim Lincecum as most are aware did not exactly overpower the Ranges in Game 1. He gave up 8 strong hits and also in his 5 innings walked three Ranger batters. He was throwing a lot of change ups and sliders with about 45% speedballs. Strange enough the Rangers 7th and 8th batters, Moreland and Molina each managed two hits off Lincecum. This will be Lincecums second opportunity to win a postseason series.
