Two of the best teams in the National League meet on Wednesday as the Philadelphia Phillies host the St. Louis Cardinals in a MLB betting game that can be seen on ESPN. The pitching matchup definitely favors the Cardinals since they will be sending Brad Penny while the Phillies go with Kyle Kendrick.
SBG Global Current Line: Cardinals - 115, Total 10 Under – 115
Brad Penny is 3-1 with a superb ERA of 1.56 this season. He has had a lot of success at Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park as he is 2-0 in three starts at Philadelphia with a 1.71 ERA and one home run allowed in 21 innings.
Kendrick has really struggled for the Phillies this baseball betting season. He is 0-1 with a 7.61 ERA. The Phillies are sticking with Kendrick in the rotation for the moment but that could change. “We need Kyle to step up,” pitching coach Rich Dubee said. “We need him to be more efficient. We need him to pitch down in the strike zone. We need his temp to pick up so we have energy playing behind him. And he’s aware of those things. Now he has to put them in play.” The Phillies are keeping Kendrick in the rotation and Nelson Figueroa in the bullpen. The Phillies would like to have J.A. Happ in the rotation but he is on the DL and they really don’t have anyone in the minor leagues to bring up. “You’ve got somebody down in Lehigh who’s pitching better right now?” Dubee said. “Right now, we think Kyle will get straightened out. And I don’t know we have a whole lot of other candidates.”
The Phillies have been without shortstop Jimmy Rollins since April 12th and they are going to be without him for a while longer. He was supposed to only miss two to four weeks but now it looks like six weeks. “I’ve had pulled muscles, strained my groin and missed a game,” Rollins said. “Something like this where it felt like somebody shot you? I’ve never been in this situation.” The Phillies are looking at mid-May at the earliest for Rollins to return.
Coming into this series the Cardinals were 7-1 in their last 8 games vs. a right-handed starter and they were 6-1 in their last 7 games as a favorite. The Phillies were 7-1 in their last 8 home games vs. a right-handed starter. The Cardinals were 1-4 in the last 5 meetings in Philadelphia before Monday’s game. Before this series began, the Under was 7-3 in the Cardinals last 10 road games. On the other side, the Phillies had gone Over in 16 of their last 23 home games.
