The Minnesota Golden Gophers not only have ridiculous nickname but they aren’t a very good football team either. And Minnesota will be severely tested in its upcoming college football betting opener against Middle Tennessee State University on September 2nd.
Kickoff for Thursday matchup is set for 7:35 Eastern Time and sbgglobal opened with the Gophers as a 3-point favorite with an over/under total at 48.5.
This is ridiculously tight spread for Big Ten team versus a Sun Belt team but this matchup must be taken within the proper context.
Minnesota, while belonging to one of the traditional powerhouse conferences in NCAA football betting is one of the worst teams in the conference. It’s coming off a 6-7 season in which the team finished 3-5 in Big Ten play. The 2010 season is what sports betting commentators euphemistically refer to as a “rebuilding season” which is a polite way of saying the team is going to be really bad until it gets some new and better player through recruiting.
The Golden Gophers averaged just 198 yards passing per game last season and just 97 yards rushing per game. Any team that averages less than 300 yards a game in total offense is not going to win many games and there’s little reason to believe that those numbers are going to improve any this season.
The Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders, however, are powerhouse in their lesser Sun Belt Conference and are coming off a 10-3 season in the college football betting action in ’09 and looking to take the Sun Belt conference title from Troy this season.
The Blue Raiders offense was a nearly unstoppable machine last season led by the Sun Belt Player of the Year Dwight Dasher. Dasher through for nearly 2,800 yards last season and ran for 1,154 more while the offense rolled up nearly 420 yards a game.
Under normal conditions the Dasher-led Raiders would be favored to beat the Golden Gophers in front of the team’s home crowd.
Unfortunately for the Middle Tennessee fans Dasher has recently been suspended by the NCAA for accepting a dubious loan and will not play against Minnesota.
As such the betting line looks pretty solid and the Golden Gophers are likely to win a close game.
