Another college football betting season on the brink of getting underway and yet another top 5 ranking for the Florida Gators. Ever since coach Urban Myer came over to Florida from the University of Utah his team has practically reserved a top-5 spot in every preseason NCAA football betting poll.
And so far he’s proven the pollsters right winning 2 national championships and producing a Heisman Trophy winner. Meyer has done it mostly on the back of outstanding recruiting. He has stockpiled more speed in Gainesville than most countries have on their Olympic squads and he’s also been blessed with a talented QB (first Chris Leak and for the past four years Heisman winner Tim Tebow).
This year’s squad remains bulging at the seams with world class speed on both sides of the ball and what many sports betting experts believe to be another talented signal caller in John Brantley.
Brantley has arguably the biggest shoes in college football betting history to fill as he’ll take over for the recently departed Tebow behind center. But that transition may be made easier as the two QB’s skills sets are about as opposite as you can get. Tebow was Bronco Nagurski with an arm. Brantley is more traditional passer who will see plenty of action in pro-style sets and he’ll take the majority of snaps under center. He’s a terrific passer and the onus will be on his WRs RBs to run precise routs and get open.
The Gators will also look to field a more traditional running attack instead of relying on Tebow’s bulldozing scrambles as a substitute for a running game.
There are plenty of questions surrounding this Gator squad and with good reason. The loss of a starting QB of Tebow’s ability, the departure of several key leaders on defense and injuries on the O-line are all legitimate concerns.
But against a team as bad as the Miami(OH) Redhawks none of these flaws should be brought to light. The Redhawks were 1-11 in 2009 and although the team is expected to be marginally better in 2010 it’s still nowhere near the same class as the Gators.
Kickoff for this Saturday matchup is set for 12:05 Eastern Time and sbg global opened with the Gators as a 36.5-point favorite with an over/under total at 52.5.
Expect the Gators to win the game and cover the betting spread.
