The past few college football betting seasons have not been kind to Auburn Tiger football fans. A traditional powerhouse in NCAA football the program watched its prestigious slip as SEC rivals such as Alabama, Florida an LSU hogged the spotlight. The Tigers played solid defense and relied on a run heavy offense that was at its best, boring. But with arrival of new Coach Gene Chizik this team has taken on a new offensive identity and is back in the top 25 in the polls.
Coming in at #22 in the AP Poll this is a team that has an explosive offense led by Junior College transfer Cameron Newton. Newton is the size of a refrigerator and at 6’ 6” 250 lbs is a very difficult man to tackle. In the team’s first game against an extremely overmatched Arkansas State team the offense rolled up a cartoonish 608 yards -171 of which came courtesy of Newton’s legs. He also passed for 186 yards and combined for 5 TDs on the day.
When the team opens up its SEC NCAA football betting conference schedule against a much improved Mississippi State Bulldog team on September 9th the Bulldog defense will have its hands full.
Kickoff for this Thursday matchup is set for 7:50 Eastern Time and SBG Global opened with the Tigers as a 2-point favorite with an over/under total at 56 (-110).
The Bulldogs defense is one of the worst in the SEC and Newton should be able to have his way against it. Miss St. gave up just 237 yards in its season opener against Memphis but there is a huge gap between the Memphis offense and the high-powered Auburn attack.
Newton will be the key to game for Auburn and will be the focal point for the Bulldog defense. It’s difficult for defenses to prepare for a dual threat QB like Newton and that’s a huge advantage for the Tigers. If the Bulldog D stacks the box to try and stop Newton from running he’ll have receivers downfield in single coverage, yet if they bring in an extra DB to play the pass it will open up running lanes for the mobile QB. Not a pretty situation for Miss St. coordinators.
Look for Newton to have a big game and for the Tigers to remain undefeated.
