Most sports betting fans, upon hearing that the Temple Owls will be hosting the Villanova Wildcats automatically think of big-time hoops match up, but these two teams are actually squaring off in what should be a very compelling college football betting matchup.
True, these two institutions of higher learning are better known for their success on the hardwood than on the grid iron but on September 3rd when these two teams open the season in Philly there will be two very good teams on the turf, including one national champion.
Villanova tore through its Division 1-AA competition last year and the claimed the subdivision national championship. And far from being a flash in the pan, the Wildcats are well poised to repeat as champs as they enter the NCAA football betting action as the #1 ranked team in the land for D1-AA teams.
No doubt this will be a challenge for the Owls who play their football in the Middle American Conference. But the Owls are a team on the rise after finishing with a 9-4 record last season; an impressive 7-1 in the MAC action.
Hopes are high for this team entering the college football betting season and the main reason for these expectations is the team’s running game. In 2009 Temple took opponents by surprise as they rolled up 192.3 yards per game on the ground.
The workhorse in Temple’s offense is sophomore tailback Bernard Peirce. Peirce exploded onto the scene last year and put the school on the football map. He set single season records for TDs and rushing TDS (16) on the way to amassing 1,361 yards and winning MAC Freshman of the Year honors.
He is a beast and should keep Villanova’s highly regarded run defense on its toes all night long. But he’s hardly the only threat in the Owls backfield fellow sophomore Matt Brown will see plenty of touches and was even listed as the starting tailback in a depth report released several weeks ago. No one actually expects Brown to start (he’s only 5-5, 170 lbs and couldn’t take the beating) but he’s a great contrast to Pierce’s running style and should give defenses all they can handle.
Kickoff for this Friday matchup is set for 5:05 Eastern Time and sbg global opened with the ??? as a ???-point favorite with an over/under total at ???.
