The Saints are the defending world champions in football and it should come as little surprise that they are favored to win their NFL betting odds opener against the Minnesota Vikings. Granted the Vikings are a great team with a great chance of reaching the Super Bowl, and even hoisting the Lombardi Trophy, but right now, the Saints are a better team and this team should prove it on September 9th when the 2010 NFL season officially kicks off.
Kickoff for this Thursday sports betting matchup is set for 8:35 Eastern Time and sbg global opened with the Saints as a 5-point favorite with an over/under total at 48.
The fact that the Saints are favored has much to with the fact that this offense was the leading scoring unit in the NFL last season (31.9 ppg) but also much to do with the fact that there are a number of question marks surrounding the visiting Vikings as they prepare for their season opener.
The Saints, by most accounts, have had a great off season. There has been some turnover, especially on the defense but the team also drafted well and a few rookies should see immediate action (CB Patrick Robinson, TE Jimmy Graham). They also return all their pieces on offense and there is no reason why this number shouldn’t continue to put up crazy numbers this season.
But the Vikings have one top defense in the league and if they can get pressure on Brees which is highly likely as this team led the NFL gambling action with 48 sacks last year it could make things very interesting and negate, to some extent, the prolific offense.
The real reason why everyone expects the Saints to win is not simply the fact that it’s got a great offense but the fact that the Vikings offense is a work in progress at the moment and nobody is expecting this team to put up many points right now. Brett Favre decided to come back for another year but not until most of training camp was over and is no doubt going to have to shake off the cobwebs when the game action starts.
Expect the Vikings offense to be a bit conservative, perhaps even sluggish. The Vike’s defense should limit the Saints scoring somewhat but New Orleans will still this sports betting matchup.
