Monday Night football is back at last and September 13th NFL gambling fans will be treated to a double dose of the action as the New York Jets and the Baltimore Ravens get the action started in the first game and the Kansas City Chiefs host the San Diego Chargers in part two of the double header.
The Ravens vs. the Jets is the show piece in this lineup but that doesn’t mean that the Chargers at the Chiefs aren’t worth checking out.
Kickoff for this Monday matchup is set for 10:05 Eastern Time and sbg global sportsbook opened with the Chargers as a 4.5-point favorite with an over/under total at 44.5.
This matchup may look like a foregone conclusion and an easy Chargers win and maybe it will be. But there’s also plenty of reason to think that this might be a close game and the 4.5 points might just be right on the money.
The Chargers are without a better team on paper but that doesn’t always mean much in the NFL betting odds action. San Diego has always been a slower starter under Norv Turner and for whatever reason they always struggle for the first month or two. Last season the team started the year with a 3-2 record before rattling off 11 straight wins. Losing the first few games of the season is not unusual for this team and in fact is the norm.
The Chargers also enter this contest with the Chiefs with plenty of question marks. Chief among them is how rookie RB Ryan Mathews will perform. The few times he got carries in the preseason he didn’t look good. Granted that doesn’t mean much and the Chargers coaches are excited about watching him against the 31st ranked run defense from a year ago (156 yards per game).
The Chargers are also without star WR Vincent Jackson who’s in the midst of a holdout and defensive star Shawn Merriman is dinged up.
There’s also the possibility that the Chiefs defense led by QB Matt Cassell and RB Jamaal Charles will get things on track this year and put a few points on the board.
But if you’re looking to make a wager on this game the smart sports betting play is still to take the Chargers to win and likely cover the spread.
