The AFC East has some very good football teams but none of them will be featured in this Week 1 NFL gambling matchup. The New England Patriots are preseason Super Bowl contenders. The New York Jets are preseason Super Bowl contenders. But neither the Miami Dolphins nor the Buffalo Bills have much hope of even finishing the season above .500. In fact, according to SI preseason rankings the Bills might just be the worst team in the NFL.
But that doesn’t mean that this shouldn’t be an interesting matchup.
Kickoff for this Sunday showdown is set for 1:05 Eastern Time and sbg global opened with the Dolphins as a 3-point favorite with an over/under total at 38.5.
On paper, the Dolphins are unmistakably the better team. After making two of best offseason acquisitions in the league (MLB Karlos Dansby and WR Brandon Marshall) this team added a heap of talent. The only problem is that is that it lost some key pieces up front on defense and failed to anything about its gaping holes in the secondary.
The defense notched 44 sacks last season, one of the lone bright spots as this unit ranked as the 7th worst defense in the NFL betting odds action. Even with Dansby, this defense isn’t much better as injuries to several starters, including LB Channing Crowder and the departure of NT Jason Ferguson has left this unit severely weakened.
Fortunately for the Dolphins the Bills aren’t very good and their offense is particularly bad (ranked 28th in the league last year). This should give the Dolphins questionable defense a little breathing room on Sunday. However, the wild card here is rookie RB CJ Spiller. He may just be the most dynamic player taken in the draft this year and has been dazzling so far in the preseason. He is capable of reaching the end zone every time he touches the ball and he get plenty of touches as he’ll be the starting RB and also see duty in the return game.
The Dolphins should have competent offense to counter any scores that Spiller might tack on the score board as Marshall should be open all game long or draw double teams that will spring his fellow receivers. QB Chad Henne has shown signs of steady progress even if the starting unit has looked awful in the preseason.
Look for Spiller to have a big debut but the Dolphins to come out on top in this sports betting contest.
