The first week of the NFL gambling season is always seems to present some of the best betting opportunities of the entire season. None of the teams have played yet and the lines makers still haven’t gotten a feel for how one team stacks up against another and this often results in attractive betting action.
Case in point: the Week 1 matchup between the Green Bay Packers and the Philly Eagles.
Kickoff for this Sunday matchup is set for 4:20 Eastern Time and sbgglobal opened with the Packers as a 2.5-point favorite with an over/under total at 47.5.
The Packers should win this game and they should easily cover the spread. And while the spread could turn out to be spot on this game could go down to the wire, Green Bay simply isn’t getting the credit it deserves. This seems like a very conservative line.
This is a matchup that features two high octane offenses. The only difference is that one is proven and the other has some major uncertainty at the most important position in all of sports.
Aaron Rogers proved over the past two NFL betting odds seasons that he’s one of the best in the business (4,434 yards, 30 TDs, 7 INTs) and he led this offense to 28.8 points per game last season, 3rd best in the league. There should be little question about what this prolific unit can do.
In contrast the Eagles have first-year start behind center and aside from a few good quarters of action, QB Kevin Kolb hasn’t proven he he’s ready to play at the pro bowl level of his processor (Donovan McNabb) and lead this team to the playoffs.
Last season Kolb put up some huge total yardage numbers in the last two games of the season but he also hoisted 3 INTs in those two games. He’s got some great weapons around him on offense like WR DeSean Jackson, and he may turn out be a brilliant QB, but against a top-ten defense Green Bay, he’s going to have his work cut out for him in his first season opener as a starter.
Even if Kolb plays well and the offense finds the end zone there is still a big disparity in the two team’s defenses and the Packers are much more likely to get a key stop if needed than the Eagles defense which ranked in the bottom half of the NFL in total defense last season (19th).
Packers should win this sports betting matchup and easily cover the spread.
