NFL betting lines handicappers at sbg global sportsbook were reminded about the Indianapolis Colts lack of polish in preseason games as they lost their opener to San Francisco 17-37 as 3.5-dogs. The Colts have covered just 4 out of 14 preseason games since 2007 and have long had the attitude that the main goal of the preseason is to come out of it without significant injuries to key veterans.
On the positive side, the most important Colt, and last year’s NFL Most Valuable Player, quarterback Peyton Manning, looked to be in midseason form as he put 10 points on the board in 16 plays before taking the rest of the day off. Curtis Painter, Manning’s replacement at quarterback, was intercepted three times while going 9/19 for 64 yards. The Colts running game, a big preseason priority was again non-descript as it gained only 8 yards in the first 25 minutes.
The 3 interceptions thrown by Painter were the difference in the game as well as a botched handoff by the Colts backup quarterback as the 49ers rallied to score 34 unanswered points en route to victory.
Indianapolis coach Jim Caldwell refused to blame Painter for the loss.
“I think he didn’t play as well as he’d like to, but he needed some help, too,” said Caldwell. “The things that are hidden, dropped passes, the things you need to extend drives, you need guys to do their jobs and we certainly didn’t play as well as we wanted.”
“Obviously, the big thing was turnovers,” Caldwell added. “We’ve got a lot of work to do, so we’ll keep working.”
The Colts will need to quickly pull themselves together as the travel to Buffalo to meet the Bills on Thursday in week 2 preseason actions. Sports betting handicappers will have a challenging decision for the game as Buffalo was also blown out in their opener at Washington.
Caldwell pulled nearly all of the starters after just 2 series and a similar player personnel plan will likely be in place at Buffalo.
The Colts have learned that they will be without starting center Jeff Saturday for up to six weeks after he went arthroscopic knee surgery. Betting NFL preseason action with the Colts means that players like Saturday will not see a lot of exhibition snaps but it is a concern for the Colts heading into the regular season.
