Perhaps someone knows the answer to this question, but it’s difficult to recall any team in recent World Cup betting history playing any worse than the Greek squad played in its opener versus South Korea. Give credit where credit is due. South Korea played a terrific game against the Greeks, but for all purposes, Greece was awful.
Just seven years ago Greece was atop the soccer betting universe after making a surprise by playing through some of the best teams in the world and claiming the Euro Cup title. But it’s evident that this is a very different (and much less talented) squad in this year’s World Cup betting competition.
In what must be a slap in the face to the proud fans of the Greek squad the World Cup betting odds makers have made them a heavy underdog in their next match versus a dangerous Nigerian squad?
Nigeria is coming off an impressive 1-0 loss to Argentina in its first 2010 World Cup betting game. A loss is never the desired result in soccer betting but Nigeria suffered one of the most impressive World Cup betting losses in a long time. Argentina is one of the top three squads in the World Cup odds competition and Nigeria came within a whisker of tying this team.
The Nigerian keeper put in the performance of the World Cup so far repeatedly denying Argentina’s shots on goals in a game which could have very easily been a 5-0 loss. The Nigerian attack also showed plenty of vigor late in the second half getting plenty of good looks at the goal and even some shots at the crossbar.
Greece never got close enough to their opponent’s goal to get display any goal scoring prowess but needless to say, if the Nigerian keeper can keep Messi and Teves from getting the ball past him he should have little trouble with a Greek squad that’s never been known for its scoring ability.
Nigeria is highly favored in the sports betting odds at 21/20. Greece was beaten so badly in its previous game that it’s hard to imagine this team winning. The best the Greeks can hope for in this one is a draw ((12/5).
