For those who do know a lot of NASCAR history the original race of this series was called the BUSCH Clash and was held from 1979 thru 1997 and then in 1998 the name of the race was changed to the Budweiser Shootout. This race was first run during Dale Earnhardt’s rookie season, and he went on to win the event a record six times.
The Budweiser shootout was the brainchild of Anheuser-Busch, who dubbed the inaugural 1979 event the Busch Classic. The race has grown since TV began to take a more active role on Televising Nascar events. This year’s Shootout features a new qualifying format for the third time in the 32-year history of the race. The emphasis has been placed on championship contenders as the starting field of drivers is made up of the 2009 Chase for the Spring Cup Championship contenders, former Sprint Cup Series Champions Betting, former Budweiser Shootout winners, winners of the Daytona 500 and the annual 4th of July weekend Coke Zero 400. The new format helps to bring light on a very exclusive fraternity of drivers.
