Everything was going so right for the Purdue Boilermakers this college basketball betting season. The team was winning, was an NCAA odds favorite to get a #1 sees in the Tournament and a Big Ten title looked eminent.
It was the first time since the days of the Big Dog Glen Robinson that there was even legitimate talk of a college basketball betting national championship for the school.
But that all changed with the tear of one ACL. And the bright picture that had been the Boilermakers NCAA odds future got much murkier in an instant.
Junior Forward Robbie Hummel suffered the knee injury earlier this week and now will almost certainly be out for the rest of Purdue’s college basketball betting season. No Big Ten Tourney and very likely no March Madness NCAA odds for the team’s heart and soul.
To find out how important Hummel is to the team’s success you need only check out his stats. He’s the team’s second leading scorer with 15.7 ppg and also the team’s second leading rebounder with 6.9 rpg. Hummel is also the best 3-point shooter on the team with 1.6 3-point FGs a game and shooting (36.4%). Oh, and he’s a 90%+ free throw shooter as well.
But what makes him so valuable to the team is that whenever the Boilermakers need a big play, whether it’s a defensive stop, a key 3-pointer, an offensive rebound and key free-throws late in the game they look to Hummel. Without Hummel in the lineup they will have to look elsewhere.
This team is still capable of winning the Big Ten and going deep in the Tourney, but it’s simply not the same without Hummel.
