Even before the Washington Capitals were eliminated from the NHL playoff betting competition the Pittsburgh Penguins were starting to show up as Stanley Cup betting favorites on many sports betting sites. But now with the early exit of the regular season points leaders (Caps, 121) the Penguins have clearly distinguished themselves as the front-runner in the NHL odds to reclaim the Stanley Cup odds title.
The Caps dominated the competition for six months of the hockey betting but once the regular season draws to a close none of that matters and the hockey wagering slate is wiped clean. The Caps faltered when the pressure was on and so far the Pens have thrived.
In particular superstar, and the NHL regular season goal scoring leader (51 goals) Sidney Crosby has been in a zone so far in the NHL playoff betting action. He terrorized the Ottowa Senators for 14 points in six games (5 goals and 9 assists). That type of performance, if it can be sustained will take the Pens all the way to a second consecutive win in the Stanley Cup betting action.
And it’s not as if Crosby has to do it alone either. After an awful start to the NHL postseason betting, teammate Egevni Malkin came roaring back against the Sens to score 8 points (4 goals, 4 assists) in the opening round series. Sergei Gonchar has also been on his game putting in 6 points in 6 games. But what bodes extremely well for the Pens in NHL playoff road ahead is that the whole team has been chipping in on the offensive end with Chris Kunitz and Bill Guerin each dropping in six points apiece against the Sens as well.
Pittsburgh is clearly the class of the East right now in the NHL playoff betting and there are a few tough teams in the West like the Sharks and the Wings, but for all intents and purposes the Pens are now the Stanley Cup odds favorite. And until some team in the NHL playoff betting competition demonstrates otherwise the quest for the NHL title still goes through the Steel City.
