There has been no more compelling story this Stanley Cup betting season than the Cinderella #8 seed Montreal Canadiens. They have knocked off the best team in the NHL betting and the defending Stanley Cup betting champions in the first two rounds of the NHL odds playoff action and looked like a team of destiny. But the Philadelphia Flyers might have something to say about that and after a Game One blow out (6-0 victory) in the Eastern Conference Finals it looks like it might be the Flyers that have a date with hockey betting destiny.
That any team, let alone the #7 seed Flyers, could score 6 goals in one game against Montreal’s goalie extraordinaire Jaroslav Halak there is mind boggling. Halak has been an impenetrable wall so far during the NHL playoff betting action shutting down the best goal scorers in the game (Alex Ovechkin and Sid the Kid) and the reason for the Habs surprising success in the Stanley Cup betting action.
But he looked more like a wet paper sack in the box on Sunday giving up 4 goals while stopping just 10 shots before mercifully being pulled midway through the second with his team down 0-4. The Flyers got to the net early taking a 1-0 lead early in the first period of the hockey betting action and then going nuts in the second period scoring the second goal just 30 seconds into the period.
Philly quickly added another with four minutes gone by in the hockey betting action and sent Halak to the showers with 10 minutes left to play in the second period. Halak was meant to be the star of this Stanley Cup betting series but instead it was his counterpart, the Flyers backup center Michael Leighton. Since getting his NHL Stanley cup betting opportunity three games ago, Leighton has made the most of it playing nearly flawlessly during the team’s series win over the Bruins and pitching a shutout in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals betting action.
He stopped all 28 shots the Habs took and is a big reason why the Flyers hold a 1-0 lead in the hockey betting action. But the big story in this series so far is Halak and his abysmal play. To go from unstoppable over the first 14 games of the NHL playoff betting action to giving up four goals in under 30 minutes in the last game is ridiculous. If he’s unable to regain his form by the next game this will be a short series and the Flyers will be in the Stanley Cup betting finals.
